What is the best time for trading?

Trading

5 min read

Those of you who are interested in Forex will have already noticed that trading results depend on the time of day. This phenomenon can be easily explained through the concept of trading sessions. Forex is an active market 24/5, this means that currency pairs are traded at all times of the day, from Monday to Friday. This is possible thanks to the overlapping of four trading sessions, which allow an activity without stops. Due to various factors, volatility varies during the day. As you know, trading results depend on volatility. So, what is the best time to engage in trading?

As can be seen from the image above, volatility is different throughout the day, which, in turn, means that the number of trading opportunities and the potential profit (or loss) also depend on when trading. The higher the volatility, the greater the risk / return ratio. In addition, each trading session has many characteristics that traders should know.

Pacific (21:00 – 05:00)

The first trading session of the day. It is the least volatile and generally does not show significant price changes. Experienced traders typically engage in trading during the Pacific session (due to reduced volatility), where it is possible to analyze the market and start making predictions. Currency pairs with AUS and NZD are particularly popular during this session (which does not necessarily mean that they are always the best assets to work on).

Asia (23:00 – 07:00)

The Tokyo, Singapore and Hong Kong exchanges are active during the Asian session. Currency pairs that include the Japanese yen are actively traded during this session. The number of active traders and the volatility increase. The term of this trading session is generally more volatile than at the beginning of the same session.

Europe (07:00 – 15:00)

London and Frankfurt are the most important European financial markets. This session overlaps with the Asian one at the beginning and with the American one towards the end. During this session, volatility tends to increase. European currencies, including EUR, GBP, CHF, enjoy greater popularity (however, this does not necessarily mean that trading on these currencies will generate positive results).

America (12:00 – 20:00)

The American, Canadian and Brazilian markets operate during this trading session. The US trading session is the most volatile and aggressive of the four. Market participants pay special attention to the main news and announcements that are published during the session. USD and CAD are the most actively traded currencies during this session.

It is worth noting that currency pairs that correspond to a particular region show greater volatility during the respective trading session (such as AUD for the Pacific session and JPY for the Asian session). Traders should adjust their approach based on the different trading sessions.

In conclusion, what is the best trading session and when is it advisable to trade? There is no single answer to this question, since the trading opportunities are numerous and can occur in all four sessions. However, the most experienced traders adhere to periods of high volatility, and in particular at the European and American sessions. Beginner traders may find it useful to trade the four sessions to familiarize themselves with their respective characteristics. Moreover, the choice for the optimal moment will obviously depend also on your position, since it is not appropriate to adopt a moment that is inconvenient or unnatural.
